TMUA scoring

What is a good TMUA score?

The TMUA reports a scaled score from 1.0 to 9.0. Universities publish no cut-offs, so the honest answer is in raw marks.

The scale, in raw marks

Each scaled score with the first raw mark out of 40 that reaches it, on the 2025 estimated boundaries. The exact mapping moves a little between sittings.

Scaled scoreRaw mark neededWhat it means
9.0~38 / 40The ceiling. Very few reach it
8.0~34 / 40Exceptional by any measure
7.0~32 / 40Strong for any TMUA course
6.5~30 / 40The number applicants usually call competitive
6.0~28 / 40Past the middle of the scale
5.0~23 / 40Around the middle of the scale

Where the marks actually are

The conversion is steepest through the middle of the raw range. Around 20 to 30 out of 40, a single extra mark can move the scaled score by two or three tenths, which is more than anywhere else on the table. That is where practice pays.

Every paper you sit on tmua.io is marked and converted on these same tables, so you always know where you stand on the 1 to 9 scale.

Common questions

What is a good TMUA score?
There is no official answer, because universities publish no cut-offs. On recent boundary estimates, 6.5 takes about 30 marks out of 40 and 7.0 about 32. Higher is simply stronger, and anything above 6.0 is past the middle of the scale.
What is the average TMUA score?
UAT-UK does not publish one. The scale is built so the middle of the cohort lands near its centre, which puts a score above 6.0 clearly into the upper part of the field.
Do universities publish TMUA cut-offs?
No. Cambridge, Imperial, LSE, Warwick and Durham all use the score alongside the rest of the application rather than as a fixed bar. Each university's own admissions pages say how they weigh it.
How is the score calculated?
Each paper is marked out of 20 with no penalty for wrong answers. The combined mark out of 40 converts to the 1.0 to 9.0 scale. The conversion is not linear, and marks in the middle of the range move the scaled score fastest.
